South Kensington’s transformation began in the mid-19th century, spurred by the Great Exhibition of 1851 held in nearby Hyde Park. The profits from the exhibition funded the creation of the "Albertopolis" vision — a cultural and educational district named after Prince Albert. This initiative led to the founding of institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Natural History Museum and Imperial College London, cementing South Kensington’s identity as a centre of learning and innovation.
Architecturally, the area is a showcase of Victorian grandeur and later Edwardian refinement. The grand white stucco terraces and Italianate villas, developed largely between the 1860s and 1880s, reflect a blend of classical and romantic styles. Many buildings feature ornate cornices, porticos and wrought-iron balconies, often centred around elegant garden squares like Onslow and Thurloe. The area's urban plan was heavily influenced by the estate management of the Day family and later the well-planned development by the Commissioners for the Exhibition of 1851. Today, South Kensington retains much of its historic fabric, offering a harmonious blend of preserved heritage and modern cultural vibrancy that reflects its distinguished past.

Consultation

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout.

A private client commissioned JRSL Interiors to restore a grand drawing room in their Grade II listed property. The room had not been redecorated in over 20 years and required sensitive repair, redecoration and a colour consultation to harmonise with the client’s existing art collection.
We carried out full redecoration of walls, ceiling, fireplace surround, sash windows, panelling and bespoke bookcases. Protective measures included cordec plastic sheeting, floor-to-ceiling dust barriers and conservation-friendly techniques to protect original floorboards.
Delicate cornices and ceiling roses showed substantial cracking and deteriation. Panelling had watermarks and previous defective paint layers. The original wooden shutters required adjusting and refitting.
Cornices and roses repaired with casting moulds and gypsum-based fillers. Panelling prepared with dustless sanding units and primed with shellac. Custom Farrow & Ball paint colour scheme with Intelligent Eggshell and Modern Emulsion for durability and depth. All finishes applied by hand for a period-appropriate result.
The drawing room was returned to its original glory with rich, warm tones complementing the client’s 19th-century art collection. The project was completed within 14 days with no disruption to adjacent living areas.
"We couldn’t be more impressed with the work JRSL Interiors carried out at our home. The level of care they took in protecting the property throughout the project was exceptional, and their level of detail was remarkable. As we weren’t residing at the address during the works, it was particularly reassuring to see the team working tirelessly — often late into the evenings — to deliver within our scheduled time frame. The finish speaks volumes: truly impeccable. We’ve since entrusted them with the full redecoration of my daughter’s local apartment and we are already looking forward to having them back to address other parts of our home. Our sincere thanks to Simon and the team for their outstanding dedication."
We use a layered approach: lining paper, Correx sheeting, and hardboard on flooring; low-tack masking tapes; protective coverings for fittings; and zip-off plastic walls to isolate rooms. Mouldings and cornices are handled with flexible filler and fine brushes.
We recommend breathable, heritage-appropriate finishes. Brands like Little Greene, Edward Bulmer and Paint & Paper Library offer excellent durability with traditional hues. We often use Intelligent Matt or Estate Emulsion on walls and Estate Eggshell for joinery.
We conduct a site survey and test swatches in various light settings. When heritage requirements are strict, we colour match using digital readers or archived paint references from historical suppliers.
Absolutely. We provide a colour consultation service, considering natural light, existing furnishings and the architectural period. For instance, warm greys and chalk whites often suit stucco-fronted terraces, while deeper tones enhance panelled libraries.
We offer flexible working, including early mornings, evenings and weekends. Our decorators work efficiently and discreetly to minimise disruption.
