South Hampstead has a rich history rooted in development and community. Originally farmland, the area began transforming in the 19th century with the expansion of London’s railway network, making it accessible and attractive for residential growth. The arrival of the railway in the 1870s spurred the construction of Victorian and Edwardian homes, attracting middle-class families. South Hampstead became known for its leafy streets, elegant architecture and proximity to central London.
Over the years, South Hampstead has maintained its reputation as a desirable residential area, characterised by diverse communities and vibrant local amenities. The neighbourhood also played a role during World War II, experiencing some wartime disruption but rebounding in the post-war years. Today, South Hampstead remains a sought-after area, blending historical charm with modern convenience and continues to reflect its Victorian origins through its architecture and community.

Consultation

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout.

Mrs Helen Cartwright, Property Manager, Goldhurst Terrace, South Hampstead, London NW6
Mrs Cartwright manages a five-storey Victorian building in South Hampstead, occupied by long-term tenants and private leaseholders. After years of exposure, the building's façade showed signs of weathering, cracked render, flaking paint and failing sash window seals. Internally, the shared stairwells had dulled significantly, with cracked cornices and faded detailing. A scaffold license delay meant JRSL Interiors had a narrow window to execute extensive works without interfering with occupancy or violating leaseholder agreements.
Façade Survey & Planning: JRSL began with a conservation-led assessment of the lime render and timber sash windows, preparing a phased schedule that would not restrict tenant access or compromise listed-building guidelines.
External Restoration: The team applied a breathable, mineral-based render system to ensure moisture escape, followed by a heritage-compliant, weatherproof coating for long-term protection. All timber windows were resealed and finished with microporous paint.
Interior Cornice & Timber Repairs: Damaged hallway cornices were removed and replicated from site-specific moulds. Timber handrails, stair skirts and skirting boards were sanded, treated and refinished with durable, decorative coatings.
Decorative Enhancement: JRSL introduced a subtle decorative glaze to the stairwell walls, creating a rich, low-sheen depth that highlights the building’s period character without overwhelming it.
Resident Coordination: All work was scheduled around tenant access requirements. Communal areas were protected with dust barriers and cleaned daily, ensuring uninterrupted use throughout the 6-week project.
The restored façade now stands crisp against South Hampstead’s leafy skyline and the building’s hallway exudes period charm with quiet elegance. Leaseholders praised the project’s finish and transparency. The integrity of the building was not only preserved but enhanced, without tenant disruption or delays.
"We’ve worked with many contractors over the years but Simon and JRSL Interiors went way above and beyond. What impressed me the most was how respectful they were of our tenants — clean, organised, quiet and extremely considerate. The decorative effects they used in the hallway are a real feature now, not just a touch-up. I was nervous about timing with the scaffold license and resident coordination, but they managed it perfectly. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them for any high-stakes residential project. We have already booked the team for another project in the spring and look forward to working with you all again soon! Thanks again"
